Recruitment and Selection - Introduction

Introduction

Recruitment and selection are very important operations in human resource management, designed to make great use of employee strength in order to meet the strategic goals and objectives of the employers and of the organization as one and this is a main process of screening, sourcing, shortlisting, and selecting the right candidates for the vacant positions (Kapur, 2018).

The difference between Recruitment and selection.

Recruitment is the process of finding and engaging the people the organization wants. Selection is a part of the recruitment process concerned with deciding which applicants or suitable candidates should be appointed to jobs (Armstrong, 2014). Recruitment is important to have the correct system of a process to select the right candidate through recruitment and selection, since that is the main pillar of an organization (Hamza et al, 2021).

The Recruitment process

The recruitment process is illustrated in figure 1.0

According to Al-Harerat (2020) Recruitment is the process of searching the candidates for employment and stimulating them to apply for jobs in the organization (Biswas, 2012). Stonner, Freeman and Gilbert (2000) stated that the purpose of recruitment is to provide a group of candidates that is large enough to let managers select the employees they need.

The importance of Recruitment process in Human resource management is to avoid selecting the wrong person and if the wrong person gets appointed the organization can affect highly to the team also to the productivity where the loss could be measure in money, as recruitment is expensive (Kapur,2008).

The Selection processes

Selection is the process of picking individuals with relevant qualifications to fill jobsin an organization. Selection is not just choosing the best candidate. Selection is an attempt to strike a happy balance between what the applicant wants to do and what the organization needs (Neeraj Kumari 2012). Selection process is not simple as it sounds, it’s quite a lengthy and multifaceted process. The selection process will vary from one organization to another based on the urgency of hiring the candidate and required job roll.

Common sequential steps in the selection process (Al-Harerat,2020):

1) Reception and initial screening interview

2) Application form

3) In-depth selection interview

4) Background and reference checking

5) Medical examination and physical pre-employment testing

6) Assessment centre’s

7) Make a final hiring decision

8) Final decision and make a fair job offer

    1. Positively agree with you! Manchester community central (2014) stated that employees are any organisation’s greatest assets, and that the success. The organisation depends mostly on having the right number of employees with the right skills and abilities. A carefully planned recruitment process and with a well-prepared induction program ensure that any new employees become effective within the shortest time. Recruiting wrong people to the organization will cause loss of time, money and large number of turnovers.

  3. The recruitment process may start by posting job openings online. This can be done internally, externally, or both, and can be done through a variety of media, including the company website. Whereas Selection carries a range of practices such as curriculum vitae, application forms, panel, and one-on-one interviews, psychometric tests, job-specific ability or know-how tests, group-based activity, references, and assessment centers are a few methods that may be used during selection (El‐Kot and Leat, 2008).

    1. According to Nzuve (1997) recruitment refers to the discovery and development of the sources of required personnel so that appropriate number of applicants will always be available for employment in the organization. Organization’s decision on whether to adopt the internal or external depends on many factors such as, motivating factors have been mentioned on the recruitment and selection process in more than one study, but there is a great resemblance between those factors and differences that may arise based on the nature of the work of each organization and on the situation work in which the company does its business (Mohammad, 2020).
